Happy Birthday John Calvin

John Calvin had one concern in his life: the supremacy of God above all things. Calvin made this very clear in his writings, sermons, and letters. After 500 years Calvin's influence is still strong- his books are still studied. I believe this is due to Calvin's unremitting zeal to see God's glory above ALL else. John Piper noted that, "From the beginning of his life to the end of his life the fundamental issue for John Calvin was the centrality and supremacy of the majesty of God." Amidst family heart break, death, and frequent illness Calvin pressed on in his writing and preaching with one goal: to maximize glory to God and minimize glory to himself. We would do well to follow his way of living.

In tribute to John Calvin on his 500th birthday I offer three things we can take and apply from Calvin's life:

1. Being a believer in Christ is not about you. Let us join John Calvin in having an unremitting zeal for the glory of God!

2. Make God known while you have the chance. John Calvin spent most days preaching and when he was not preaching he was writing sermons. His goal was to make God known everyday of his life. This is a good goal for us to practice.

3. Exult God over all else. John Calvin was one of the greatest bible expositors to ever walk the earth, but his exultation always took precedents over his exposition. Let's make sure that we are exulting God up and over everything else that finds its way into our lives.

“Let us not cease to do the utmost, that we may incessantly go forward in the way of the Lord; and let us not despair in the smallness of our accomplishments”

-John Calvin
