Have you ever been up really late at night and seen those tacky exercise equipment infomercials? I remember this one Chunk Norris infomercial and all he kept saying as he moved back on forth on the this very over priced piece of equipment was, "Oh yeah....feel the burn!" Now don't get me wrong, I am all for Chuck Norris, but this was just weird, but it got me thinking about what it means to really feel the burn. Usually we would equate this "burn" with some kind of intense working out, but in the last chapter of Luke's gospel this "burn" takes on a whole new meaning.
As two men walked towards the village of Emmaus they discussed everything that had just happened (death, burial, and resurrection of Christ). As they walked Jesus himself joined them and joined in to their conversation. Bottom line: they were sad at what had just taken place and Jesus corrects their thinking and than breaks bread with them somewhere along the way. All this to say, their eyes were opened and they recognized that it was Jesus who had walked and talked with them- and than vanished. What these men say next is key- v.32, "Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?"
They felt the burn, but it wasn't from any workout routine- it was from having the Scriptures (the bible!) opened up to them. Let's be honest- when was the last time you felt the burn when you were reading the very words that God has given us in written form. The bible is something that is talked about, studied, and criticized constantly- it is at the same time very rarely read and meditated on to teach, correct, and rebuke with all righteousness.
Let's feel the burn!
